The Laurel Leaf
As a gal that loves the classical form evident in Greek and Roman design, it’s no surprise that one of my favorite decorative elements is the laurel wreath. When my friends at the Style Box Shop asked if they could send over one of their gorgeous wreaths I was over the moon. Style Box Shop handcrafts stunning wreaths for their Etsy shop and they are the go-to source for designers seeking quality home decor at affordable prices. Kelly sent the Laurel Bay Leaf Crest Wreath in a warm brushed brass to me. And it is even more gorgeous in real life than I imagined! Laurel wreaths are perfect year round and this beauty looks great in so many places in my home. I can see myself moving it around the house each time a new season rolls around.
A laurel wreath is a circular wreath made of interlocking branches and leaves of the fragrant bay laurel (Laurus nobilis). Traditionally, laurel wreaths were worn on the head as a crowning emblem in Greek mythology and in ancient Greece. In fact, laurel wreaths pre-date the crown and symbolized victory, power, and glory. Caesar and Napoleon Bonaparte both acknowledged the historical importance and appeal of the laurel wreath. In addition, wreaths were bestowed upon winners in competitions in poetry or sports, such as the Ancient Olympic Games. We saw this tradition repeated at the 2004 Summer Games in Athens. The saying “resting on one’s laurels” comes from this and means that someone relaxes now because he or she did something good in the past. And, finally, terms “baccalaureate and “poet laureate” both refer to the laurel leaf.
